The young “campers” at SJCT’s Musical Theatre Camp** this year get to bring a beloved story and its infectious music to the stage. The three-week day camp for experienced young actors culminates in four performances of James and the Giant Peach, Jr.—Timothy Allen McDonald’s offbeat adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story about a boy, his insect friends, and their amazing journey.
The book has been a popular staple in elementary school reading programs, and SJCT’s Youth and Family Theatre Director Penelope Haskew says: “It will be fun for the kids to inhabit all those different roles they are so familiar with.” Camp music director Jamie Mountford is enthusiastic about the play as well. She says the campers [and audiences] will be thrilled with the music, written by the Tony, Oscar, and Golden Globe-winning team of Benj Pasik and Justin Paul. “Every song is different; each has its own flavor, rhythms, and harmonies,” said Jamie.
